Standardize the grid samples
Ruud--nice to see the site. A suggestion: is there a way of standardizing the display of grids? It's a bit disorienting to have the format of examples change from page to page. --Nd 06:50, 11 November 2006 (CET)
Hi nd,
For these situations, Wikipedia has a {{sofixit}} template, which would be used as a standard answer.
I've started this wiki using text examples at first, then used SudoCue screenprints, and finally created a {{grid}} template that creates a grid in a HTML table. Others have also added their material with their own format.
This is an open wiki, not a one-man project. If you think it would be better to standardize samples, write some guidelines and put it on the Help page. Adding content is my main priority at this moment. We can always improve the quality and appearance later on.

I guess I am guilty of contributing example grids in at least three or four different formats... Heh! I simply used whatever format I found convenient. --Unkx80 13:40, 11 November 2006 (CET)
- I prefer clear displays (i.e. nicely done PNGs/GIFs/etc., or else an HTML table) to pure text examples for most purposes. Other than that I don't have a strong preference, except for some kind of standardization (esp. within a single page of examples). What programs do people typically use to create their diagrams? Would there be one or two we could settle on? -- Perhaps this discussion needs to be moved to a different talk page (which one?) --Nd 05:15, 12 November 2006 (CET)
New project page added
I've added a new project page: Project:Examples. The discussion on this subject has been moved to its talk page. We can continue the discussion there, but you can also help to draft the guideline. Thanks Ruud 12:57, 12 November 2006 (CET)
Policies discussion
Yo Ruud, it seems that my comment over at Talk:Solving technique has been ignored? Basically, I am asking on which special page Sudopedia editors can discuss policies as and when the need arise.
By the way, in the Go community, it is agreed that individual game records or positions are not copyrightable, but collections of these are. What is the position of copying examples in the Sudoku community? Thanks.
--unkx80 19:04, 12 November 2006 (CET)
Individual puzzles created for and posted on one of the forums should be OK. It would be polite to mention the source. You have permission to copy any individual puzzle from sudocue.net and sudokuvault.com. When the only available example for a particular situation is apparently copyright protected, use a scrambled version instead. Copyright may go a long way, but it does not include all mathematical equivalents.

General Guidelines page added
We'll use project:guidelines as an index to Sudopedia guidelines. I do not want to impose too many rules that would repel potential contributors, but some guidelines, like the examples guideline, could be useful, as well as a place where we can discuss policies.

Sudopedia bug?
Hi Ruud,
I am wondering what browser you are using to add content in Sudopedia. When I use Firefox 2 and Internet Explorer 6/7, pages with "&" in their titles are treated as if these are truncated before the "&" character. For example, Sudopedia treats Trial & Error and P&P as "Trial" and "P" respectively, and proceeds to report that "There is currently no text in this page". Help?
--unkx80 15:22, 7 January 2007 (CET)
Hi unkx80,
The problem lies with the search-engine-friendly names, which are processed by an Apache mod. The following URL seems to work fine:
http://www.sudopedia.org/index.php?title=P%26P
The mod seems to replace %26 with &, which is removed because it is a parameter separator. The only remedy I see at this moment is to link directly to Trial_and_Error and Pencil_and_Paper.
--Ruud 00:47, 8 January 2007 (CET)
Noted with thanks. But if you are using Apache 1.3.26, then the http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Apache_config page contains information on how to fix this.
--unkx80 07:43, 8 January 2007 (CET)
We're using Apache 2.0. No fix for this version available yet.

Canonical Form/Canonicalize Duplication
Ruud, I didn't find your entry on canonicalize (it's not indexed in the terminology index) until after I had shoved my own oar in with Canonical form.
You have bits I haven't covered, but I outline a method! I think its best (as you know more about it than me) if you merge the pieces in whatever way you consider best.

As a "librarian" (more or less equivalent to "sysop" here) over at another wiki, we found that we have not been very successful in maintaining and updating index pages over there. So Sudopedia needs the help of users like you to update the index pages here. =)
--unkx80 05:21, 17 January 2007 (CET)
David: I'm in the middle of a canonicalization project, so I will review and edit your article when I'm done with it.
unkx80: Fortunately, we started with the indexes here, so they cover most topics. From time to time we must check them against the latest additions.

Protecting the main page does not automatically protect its talk page
I observed that you have sometimes deleted the talk page and then protected the main page. However, this does not prevent vandals and bots to recreate the talk page. A better solution would be to delete the talk page, recreate it and then have it protected. Just FYI.
--unkx80 21:41, 14 February 2007 (CET)
Thanks for the tip. From now on, I suggest we protect every page that has been targeted by spambots.

Jigsaw Puzzles
Do you know about a place where I can find and print out many jigsaw puzzles? I am looking for some sort of generator for them. Razorflame 22:56, 20 January 2008 (CET)
Can we get the Talk:X-Colors page protected? It's been hit repeatedly by spambots recently.

Page Protection Needed
Ruud,
There are a couple of pages (see the recent changes history) that have been subjected to repeated spamming. Could we get them protected?
Thanks,
